Halloween has passed and what’s the next big event on the calendar?? Well, yeah, there’s Thanksgiving, but I was actually thinking of something bigger, redder, jollier, with a little ho-ho-ho thrown in on the side.
A few simple pieces equals one comfy costume!
This is possibly the most comfortable costume I’ve worn so far this month. Seriously, I bought this long sleeved tie dye shirt at Scavenge about two years ago. And I wasn’t even planning to use it as part of a groooovy Halloween costume. I had to have it just because it was so comfy and . . . well . . . let’s face it . . . everyone needs some tie-dye in their lives. It’s therapeutic, I tell you.
When it was time to head to Scavenge for work a few days ago, I was feeling the need for comfort. That meant it was time to get all hippied out. I almost felt like I was cheating. I wore my most comfortable Levis, my super-comfy tie dye shirt, and added a hippie wig, the three accessories in the Hippie Kit (John Lennon glasses, peace symbol necklace, and headband), then topped it all off with a leather fringe belt I found at a thrift store.
When I walked into work, I got some great looks. Mouths dropped open. There were gasps and even an “Oh my god, that soooo doesn’t look like you!”
Signs of a successful costume. And I got to be totally comfy and relaxed the whole time. Completely, grooooovy, man!
Here was the plan: be a hippie. I had my clothes picked out – my jeans, my long sleeved tie-dye shirt, my sandals, along with my hippie wig, John Lennon glasses, headband, and big peace necklace. Only one problem . . . the weather. The temps jumped yesterday to the upper 70s and my planned costume for work was no longer so groovy.
What could I come up with QUICKLY that would be a comfy, functional and very cool costume??? I love the Roman Soldier helmet that we carry and had been meaning to make a whole costume to go with it, so I went with one of Scavenge’s handy-dandy costume kits.
The Roman Soldier kit comes with a gold lamé helmet and collar, a gold rope belt, and faux leather cuffs. All I needed was the toga. I headed off to the thrift store where I intended to by a sheet that I could make into a toga. I discovered that a nice large women’s nightgown would cost me less money. So I walked out with a white nightgown for $2.99.
At home I cut off the sleeves and the bottom 4 inches of the nightgown. It was a tad see-through, so I used a red sash as my belt instead of the gold rope belt provided in the kit. That kept me from being too showy in the front. The back was fine because when I tied the sash around my waist, the “toga” gathered in the back.
I wore some tan flip flops that could have been made better if only I had time to get some leather to make them look like Roman sandals . I could have bought some costume Roman Sandals, but they were just too big for my teeny feet. In the end, I was pretty happy with my look and totally thrilled with how easy this was and how cool I felt at work.
And the moral of the story is: check the weather when planning your costume. What’s the forecast for Halloween night in your neck of the woods????
Any costume can be tweaked, fine-tuned, or played with to create a look that is uniquely YOU.
In fact, in my admittedly expert opinion, not only can every costume be tweaked, every costume should be tweaked. What would be the point of just pulling a costume out of its bag, slapping in on and heading out to a Halloween party? If you do that, you run a huge risk of running into the other “Cinderellas” out there who did the same thing.
Now, if this were the King’s Ball you were attending, hoping to find your very own Prince Charming, you wouldn’t dare risk being just one of many Cinderellas, all dressed the same. You’d find a way to make your look a bit different, to make yourself stand out from the crowd.
Whitney has done just that with our Sexy Cinderella Costume. The costume actually has a lace up crop top and a skirt, with the designers intending Cinderella to have the belly exposed.
Whitney said no thanks to that and added a snug white tank. When I saw her, I actually thought the costume was supposed to be that way – it looked so good. This tweaking takes a bit of the sexiness off the costume and sends it just a bit more over to the playful side.
Whitney also toned down the sexified look by going with knee socks and tennies instead of the fishnet stockings and clear high heels worn by the model. The final Cinderella tweakage was with the hair. Whitney put on a long, blond wig, and did some pulling it up back, tucking, and pinning to get this look.
Pretty stinken’ cute look she’s got going there. Very fun, very playful, very distinctive. Now that you’ve seen what a little tweaking can do for Cinderella, it’s time for you to get out there and tweak your own costume and make it uniquely YOU!

Today we’ve got Sheriff Gumby. We started with the Gumby costume and just added a cowboy hat and vest, along with a big sheriff’s star. You could create all sorts of Gumby variations of your own.
How about a Pirate Gumby? Just add a pirate hat or bandana, an eye patch, a vest and a sword and you’re ready to search for buried treasure.
Sailor Gumby? Add a sailor hat and a red, blue or black kerchief tied around the neck, or one of those foam or inflatable life rings.
Gangster Gumby? Add a fedora, a Tommy gun, and a black tie. Maybe even a black pinstriped vest too.
Hippie Gumby? Throw on a hippie wig, a headband, a peace pendant, maybe a fringe vest, and some John Lennon glasses.
Policeman Gumby? Add a policeman’s hat, the badge, glasses, a utility belt with handcuffs, and a gun.
As you can see, the possibilities are endless. And you can tell by the smile on Sheriff Gumby’s face, he loves to dress up. Heck, you could even make a more grown up Gumby, and create Stripper Gumby. Just add the cuffs and collar. I can’t recall an episode where Gumby has ever done that!
Welcome to October – the month with the most fun, most exciting, most creative holiday of the year. Halloween is now only 30 days away and to celebrate the wonderful looks of Halloween, we’ll be counting down to the big day by showcasing a new costume every single day. All the photos you’ll see over these next 31 days are of average people, just like you. Not the manufacturers models and without any touching up. These are friends and others we’ve tricked, fooled, and blackmailed into showing off some of our favorite costumes.
Today, let me introduce you to that brave girl who is always up for a trip down the rabbit hole, a tea party with the Mad Hatter and crew, or a croquet match with the Queen of Hearts. It’s Alice in Wonderland. We’ve added a black petticoat, fairy tale shoes, and the most awesome wig I’ve seen in months. It’s called the Naughty Girl wig, but please don’t tell Alice that. She wouldn’t approve of its name.
Have some fun this Halloween as sweet, curious, fun-loving Alice. Don’t pack it too far away. You can always use the costume again for any adventures in Wonderland you may have planned, a play, or to re-capture your childhood spirit after a rough day/week at work!
Have you ever seen this sort of family? Maybe at an airport, or a theme park, or some other public place? I spent the last few days in airports, subway stations, and even downtown New York City and you just wouldn’t believe how many coordinated families I saw.
They were everywhere – some wearing matching shirts only, others dressed in entire matching outfits. I knew two families who used to do this every time they travelled or took the whole family on outings to crowded public places. They’d dress everyone t-shirts of bright purple, fluorescent yellow, or some other “get your attention” color. As I sat in the airport people-watching between flights, I saw several of these ultra-safe, ultra-coordinated families moving their way through the crowds. I’ll give it to them, they sure did stand out.
And then I got to thinking . . . why not take it a step further? Why just do matching jeans and t-shirts? I mean, the whole wear matching, brightly colored shirts, is so 1980’s. Everyone is doing it. And they are all doing the same thing. If you really want to stand out, you’re going to have to do something a bit different.
How about matching wigs? Your group would be so easy to spot in a crowd if you were all wearing . . . red afro wigs.
Head toppings are easy, so pick out a crazy hat – of course, make it something bright and outlandish. Your family will be safe, secure, together and having fun all at the same time.
Got a favorite sports team? Have everyone wear that team’s jersey.
Going somewhere cold? How about matching costumes. Something to keep you warm and easy to identify.
How about a family of Teletubbies?
Have everyone dress as a Hogwarts’ student with a nice robe and scarf.
Or a family of superheroes? Okay, maybe that’s going a bit far (or maybe not), but you get the idea. If you are going to wear matching clothes, have some fun with it. And, on top of all that, you’ll have the perfect set of coordinated outfits to use for your next set of family portraits or Christmas cards. Talk about efficient!
Totally groovy! That’s what it was then. That’s what it is 40 years later. It was three days of music, art, debauchery (according to some), peace, love, and history-making on a farm in Bethel, New York.
A half a million people showed up, camped out, dealt with the rain and mud, figuring out how to deal with things like where to sleep, where to pee, and getting food and water.
The concert goers soaked in themselves in the music of now legendary musical performers like Santana, The Who, The Grateful Dead and Jimmie Hendrix and so many more.
40 years later, Woodstock is still the most famous event in the history of rock and it is still celebrated across the country every year. Join the party, man!! Dig out your tie-dyed shirts, your tattered bell-bottomed jeans, your psychedelic glasses, peace symbols, and long, wild, and free hair. Load your friends into your VW Van and cruise to your nearest Woodstock Anniversary event, Woodstock Theme party, or any party or bar. Just be a part. Just celebrate. Just remember.
Make sure you’re in your tie-dyed threads, your flower girl outfits, put on those hippie glasses and peace symbols for Taking Woodstock to be released, or, as they say, “coming to a theater near you,” on August 28. It’s all about the original Woodstock in 1969.
