Costume Countdown Day 16: Superheroes Rule!

October 16th, 2009

I have a soft spot in my heart for superheroes.  I fell hard for them as a kid, and, well since I’ve never really grown up, I still think they totally rule!! There was just no way we were going to do this costume countdown without a superhero costume appearing.

Robin Costume

This Sexy Robin Costume is one of my very favorites!! I’ve seen women try this one on in the store and thought it looked great. My friend, Katie, posted some pictures of her in a different Robin costume at party and she looked awesome. I just had to try this Sexy Robin costume on for myself.

I’m wearing size XS here and it fits me perfectly. It’s snug and cozy but not tight. This is really important since the dress doesn’t have a zipper or buttons. You just pull it on. It’s form-fitting and super comfy. Just don’t try squeezing into a size too small. If it doesn’t glide over your hips (or shoulders, depending how you put it on), then stop right there and move up a size.

This costume made me want to strike a classic superhero pose - looking confidently into the future.

I love the way the cape is small and attaches with a Velcro strap. I love the sleevelets, the way they add such a cool feel to the costume. The mask is fabric not plastic with a band that attaches behind your head with Velcro. And while it’s one of the best masks I’ve put on, it’s still a mask.

Superhero Costume

I don’t know how those other superheroes fight crime with their peripheral vision obscured in masks. I would opt for using some black face paint and creating my own mask that doesn’t mess with my vision.  I got this idea from Katie. She looks pretty great, doesn’t she? Even Batgirl is doing it too. All you superheroes out there can take this tip as a freebie from me. May it help you in your mission to save the world! It’s easier to defeat those bad guys when you can see them. Who knew!?

Costume Countdown Day 12: The Bees Have It

October 12th, 2009

queen-bumble-bee costumeThere are a few things I can count on every Halloween. First, most people will wait until the last week to do their shopping. Some of these folks will act somewhat amazed that we can actually run out of stuff. Others seem purely astounded at the crowds and the lines. Second, we will get some drunk shoppers in the store who will make life a bit difficult. (I don’t get why shnockered people have the urge to costume shop.) One more thing that is always to be expected at Halloween, the bee costumes will be a big hit.

I can see why. Every one of our bee costumes (and we have quite a few styles to choose from) is really cute.  The bright yellow and black stripes are so cheerful and fun. They all have wings that are small, bouncy, and won’t get you stuck in a doorway. They are really well-made and work with different heights and builds. I’ve even worn one and I can attest they are really comfortable and easy to move in.

One thing I have yet to see, but think would be a fun idea, would be to have a bunch of girls all get the same bee outfit. Then they could be a swarm of bees when they all hit the same party together.

Costume Countdown Day 8: Lovin’ My Lederhosen

October 8th, 2009

Lederhosen CostumeLet’s face it, lederhosen are cool. And I’ll admit it, I’ve been coveting my neighbor’s lederhosen for years. I see the German guys in them and the Oktoberfest celebrants, but only the male ones. The girls, they get stuck in the beer girl or Alpine dresses. While those are cute and sexy and all that good stuff, they just aren’t lederhosen.

Costume Countdown Day 5: Sailor Girl

October 5th, 2009

Some costumes require a lot of “stuff.” You know what I mean. You either have a wear a lot of pieces or carry accessories to really get the look just right. While those are fun, sometimes you just want that comfortable, super simple costume that you look really great in, can mingle, dance, hop a fence, run from the cops . .  . or whatever in, right?

Sailor-Girl Costume

This could be just that sort of costume. If you are going to a party that’s going to be crowded and warm, this one will have you cool looking and cool feeling while others are sweating up a storm. Since it’s basically just a pair of stretchy shorts, a bikini top, and a hat you can just imagine how totally comfortable you are going to be. And comfortable equals better dancing, more mobility and a generally happy disposition. Though it’s simple, it says sailor all the way.

Sailor-Girl Salute

So when it comes time for some shore-leave this October, this is the uniform you want to hit the party in . . . unless, of course, you dock in some fricken cold place on the east coast.

OktoBEERfest

September 23rd, 2009

The blessed month of October is just one week away and it’s time for you to get edumacated. It will make you feel so smart, so informed, and so grateful to me if you ever find yourself on Jeopardy or Who Wants to be Millionaire and have a question on this subject as the big one. Just remember to thank me when you win the big bucks, and by “thank me,” I mean “share some of the loot,” of course.

Oktoberfest

Today’s topic: Oktoberfest. Visions of glass mugs overflowing with beer and foam are dancing through your head right now, but I’ve got some shocking news for you. Oktoberfest wasn’t all about beer when it was conceived.

It began waayyyy back in 1810 to commemorate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese.  First it was just a big horse race. No beer. The citizens of Munich had such a good time, they decided to hold Oktoberfest every year and to organize it. A parade was added. Still no beer. Next came booths and tents for games and selling bratwurst. You guessed it, no beer.

It took until late 1880’s for beer tofinally make its appearance. The booths and tents got bigger and became beer halls, beer gardens, and were used for music and dancing as well. It was 1892 when beer was first served in glass mugs.

Now beer is the central point of Oktoberfest, with food, games, music and period costumes playing only supporting roles. Six million people head to Munich each year for Oktoberfest, making it the largest people’s fair in Europe and maybe even in the whole world. They’ve got 14 huuuuuuge tents each run by a different brewery. The biggest one holds about 12, 000 people.

Oktoberfest Beer Tent

Now don’t you feel so much smarter? So much more ready for Oktoberfest? Then get out there and celebrate. Travel to Germany for the original or hit up a local event. Santa Barbarians should make a point of of visiting Santa Barbara Oktoberfest on October 10.  Drink up some of that special brew, consume mass quantities of traditional German food, and, by all means, do it right by wearing costumes from the 1800s.

Girls, that means finding a dirndl that suits you. What? You don’t know what a dirndl is? It’s your basic beer girl costume or what Gretel, of Hansel and Gretel, would wear.

Guys, it’s time for lederhosen or at least some Alpine wear from the 1800’s. Again, think Hansel and Gretel.

And while you are out enjoying the brew, the food and the fun, whisper a quick little word to Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese thanking them for inspiring such a great event, even though it did take 80 years to bring beer into the picture.

Roma Boots by Leg Avenue Shoes on Bones!

February 21st, 2009

Ok, I love murder mystery shows. I was catching up watching my DVR recording of the show Bones on Fox and what did I see? The victim was apparently wearing those super cute gladiator boots called Roma by Leg Avenue Shoes.

The mystery took place at an ImagiCon is a Sci-Fi Fantasy Convention and the costumes were incredible. How many of you enjoy dressing in costumes for fantasy conventions?

Live long and prosper!

Designing Costumes

September 11th, 2008

Ok, you’re out shopping for a Halloween Costume and find it’s completely overwhelming. I mean, how many different Halloween costume ideas really have to exist? Or, how many of the SAME costume have to exist for pennies difference? I see it every day in this business. One costume company comes out with a really hot design. It sells out the first year, so the next year, every costume company knocks off that costume – maybe using slightly different material and then shaving off a few pennies here or there in price.

This knock-off approach kills the costume. What was once a great Halloween Costume is now just another costume. Now, I know the difference (since we buy costumes from these companies year after year) and I know who came out with the costume first and I know which company creates a quality costume. Sometimes these are not the same costume company. I always go with quality because I know my customers will not stand for any costume that is going to fall apart after wearing it once.

The problem is that the customer doesn’t know the difference between the original designers of the costume versus the costume company that consistently creates quality costumes. So maybe the first year, a costume company that historically creates very poor quality costumes comes out with a great idea. As a costume retailer, we won’t buy that costume – we can’t risk the customers’ dissatisfaction. We wait for the costume manufacturer that consistently creates quality costumes to produce the costume. Sure, we sometimes miss out on a nice design, but we don’t ever miss the hassle of dealing with all the complaints that are sure to come from that poor quality costume.

So, how does a costume purchaser find out which costume company will consistently create a quality costume? That’s a tough question. Most costume retailers won’t just give out that information since they want to sell costumes no matter what. I can tell you that Leg Avenue puts out some of the best quality costumes on the most consistent basis. Sure, they’ve had a few that didn’t meet our expectations, but year after year, they have provided great quality costumes.

If you’re looking for a Halloween Costume this year, be sure to check our selection of Leg Avenue Costumes. They are hot and sexy and will appeal to your naughty side. Have questions about two seemingly identical costumes? Comment here and include links to the two costumes (or maybe even 3) and we’ll help you sort out the differences.
