A Lifetime of Costumes
Costumes are a huge part of our lives whether we like it or not. We use costumes (perhaps not by choice) from practically the day we are born to the day we leave the planet. As babies, our parents put us in outfits that are so cute and adorable, like teddy bear pajamas – which are really just costumes. We go to elementary school and participate in school plays – often getting our parents to make our costumes. We join brownies, girl scouts or boy scouts. Sure, they call these uniforms, but really they are just costumes with a purpose.
In junior high school, we join the cheerleaders or football team and other sports teams. These uniforms are just costumes. If you don’t believe me, just look at every Halloween store – they all carry baseball uniform costumes, football costumes, cheerleader costumes. In high school, you might join drumline or the drill team. Again, each participant is wearing a costume depending on the theme of the music.
In college, there are theme parties nearly every weekend. So, at this stage of your life, you are getting wiser and thus creating a “costume box”. This is where you save all your costumes and costume accessories so that later, you can mix and match and create some really unique costume combinations.
Your job often requires you to wear a costume. Ever notice that all the waiters and waitresses wear the same thing and often in sports bars, these employees are required to wear a themed uniform, i.e. costume. Sometimes, during football season, the waiters and waitresses will wear their favorite football jersey, or they will all wear a referee costume. The beauty of these costumes is that often your employer will buy them for you or reimburse you. Add these to your costume box for later use!
Once you’ve saved enough money, you might go on a cruise vacation. Each cruise that I’ve ever heard of has a themed event. Some cruises, like the ones from Los Angeles to Ensenada are often entirely theme based. Themes are often based on decades, like a 70’s party cruise or 80s cruise. Either way, they want you to dress up and have fun!
The whole point of getting into costume, is to have fun, let loose and laugh and smile and really enjoy yourself. Get back to your childhood and remember what it was like to just play dress up. Throughout your entire life, you will be faced with events and parties and vacations that encourage you to dress up.
Everyone needs a costume or two in their lifetime. For this reason, it is a good idea to shop for costumes year-round. Seeking costumes that you will feel comfortable in and enjoy wearing. It’s very difficult to find a costume at the last minute – too much pressure. So the message is to shop early and shop often. Even if you just pick up a small costume accessory – it’s best to buy it when you see it, because you never know when they will sell out.
Don’t forget costume wigs. These are fabulous to pull out any time of year just to spice things up and turn heads as you walk down the street. And, if you get caught off guard and invited to a costume party at the last minute, often all you really need is a wig – so have one or two on hand in that costume box.
Remember, costumes are used throughout your life and for your entire lifetime. Everyone should have a costume or two and better yet, everyone should have a costume collection and costume box. If you haven’t started filling yours yet, this is a great time of year to get started!
